Overview
and Objectives:
My name is Jason Carroll, and as an American high school exchange student living in Dakar I have noticed that many foreigners
(Westerners and people from various African Countries alike) have trouble and
are dissuaded from using the public transport system due to its seeming
complexity. While there are some nuances to taking the bus in Dakar in my opinion the system is much simpler to use than it seems with some practice
and a decent understanding of how the system works.
This guide is intended
for non-Senegalese people living in Dakar to acclimate themselves with the
system with the hopes of teaching basic knowledge of the system, and contains
- A description of each form of transportation in Dakar,
- Some Safety tips,
- A How to/ Etiquette guide to taking Dakar buses,
- Useful Wolof vocab,
- A map section.
This guide
was created using my own personal experiences taking the bus, those of other
Americans who have integrated into Senegalese culture and take public transit in
Dakar, and those of young Senegalese who are well acclimated with the system, and with the help of experts in the domain such as high-level bus company employees, and the Peace Corps Senegal employees.
ALL of the guide entries can be found in the 'PAGES' column to the right.
